Geeta Phogat's struggle and success story

Birth

Bilali is a small village in Bhiwani district of Haryana. There was a time when a daughter was considered a curse in this village. As soon as the daughter was born, mourning sorrow came in the place of happiness. Not only this, but it was also considered that girls go to school. Amidst such circumstances, Geeta Phogat was born on 15 December 1988 in Bilali village.

Geeta Phogat's childhood

Even today, there is no shortage of people wanting only sons in our country. In the beginning, Geeta's parents also had similar thinking. In pursuit of a son, the Phogat couple also became the father of four daughters, of which Geeta is the eldest. But later Geeta's father Mahavir Singh Phogat ji realized that daughters are also not inferior to sons and they decided to follow their daughters in a way no one could think of - they gave Geeta and her sisters Started making wrestlers.

At the age of playing with dolls, Geeta had to work hard under the protection of her father. She would go for a run at dawn with her sister Babita and exercise vigorously. After this, the practice was required for hours in the arena, in which the boys were also involved, but it was difficult to face the society there. Think for yourself what would happen if a girl wrestles in a village where girls are not allowed to go to school? There was an uproar in the village on hearing of Geeta learning to wrestle. He was criticized everywhere. But Mahavir Singh Phogat, without caring for the criticism, started training Geeta.

Seeing Geeta learning the tricks of wrestling, she started being considered a big doll girl. The rest of the people in the village refused to associate their daughters with Geeta.

People would say-

Look how shameless father is. Instead of sending a daughter to her in-laws, she wrestles him.
On this, Mahavir Phogat Ji would give the same answer… and we should also understand that answer well -
Why can't a girl become a wrestler when a girl can become prime minister ???

In this way, Geeta Phogat had a very difficult childhood. But it is said that if the intentions are strong and fresh, then no power in the world can stop you from moving forward.

Nobody could stop Geeta and her father and by running the fire, Geeta set the record in wrestling like no Indian woman had set to date.

Father believed that the daughter will become a successful wrestler

She became the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Olympics when Karnam Malleswari won a bronze medal in weight lifting at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. This victory had a profound effect on Geeta's father Mahavir Singh Phogat. He felt that when Karnam Malleswari can win the medal, my daughters can also win the medal. And this is where he got the inspiration to make his daughter's champions.

Only then did he start preparing Geeta-Babita to win a medal. Mahavir made rules for everything from exercise to food and drinking and started teaching Gita-Babita the tricks of wrestling.
Geeta's father was one of the finest wrestlers of the 80s and now he was also a strict coach for Geeta.

Geeta says, "Papa used to tell me often that when you eat and drink like boys, then why can't wrestling fight like boys?" So I never felt that I could not wrestle. "

Geeta Phogat's wrestling journey

Moving beyond the village riot, Geeta overtook everyone in the district and state level in wrestling and started preparing herself for national and international matches.
Geeta says that - “He always made me realize that I am not inferior to boys. The villagers did not like Kattai to get daughters. But Papa never cared for them. "

The result of Mahavir ji's coaching and Geeta's hard work was that in Jalandhar - In 2009, Geeta won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships. After this, Geeta never looked back and continued her wrestling journey.

Won Gold Medal in 55 Kg category of freestyle women wrestling at Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010. And she became the first Indian woman to do so.
In 2012, he created history by winning a gold medal in the Asian Olympic tournament.

Win effect

Bilali comes to the typical villages of Haryana which are notorious for the feticide of the daughter before birth. And despite being the daughter of such a village, what Geeta did is nothing short of a miracle. When Geeta reached the village for the first time by winning the gold medal in the Common Wealth Games, the same people who never tired of taunting her stood with bands and flowers. The victory of Geeta had also defeated the orthodox thinking of the villagers.

Even Geeta's grandmother, who used to consider the birth of a girl as a burden, now says- Even if God gives such daughters a hundred, it is less.
